## About this video

Free & Private AI Translations in Drupal - Running Directly in the Browser

What if you could translate content in Drupal using AI - completely free and without sending data to external services?

In this video, I show how to use the Google Chrome built-in Translator API together with the Drupal Browser Provider and AI Translate module to run translations directly inside the user’s browser.

That means:
\* No external API calls
\* No third-party data sharing
\* True privacy
\* Zero cost per translation

Everything runs locally via Chrome’s built-in AI capabilities.

In this walkthrough, I show:

How the Chrome Translator API works

How to configure the Browser Provider

How to connect it to AI Translate

How to get browser-based translations working in Drupal

If you're working with AI in Drupal and care about privacy, cost control, or local-first architecture, this is a powerful setup.

- 0:00 This video is sponsored by FreelyGive. If you need help with uh Drupal and AI or AI in general, just get in contact with us. So today I'm going to showcase a very short video, but something very
- 0:12 powerful if you're if you have a multilingual site. And that's how you can do automated Drupal translations um using AI, but without it costing any money and without it being a privacy
- 0:27 concern. meaning that you can translate your private material that is for certain people's eyes only and that is using something called translation with built-in AI from the AI on Chrome. So
- 0:40 what this is, it is a provider that's built into the Chrome browser. And I've already shown a video before about some of the more experimental things they have. But what I'm showcasing today is
- 0:53 something that is stable already in the Chrome browser you have, assuming you update uh u and don't have a very old version. So we have the browser provider and the idea behind the browser provider
- 1:07 is to have a provider that can talk specifically then to front-end providers. Uh right now well right before the latest releases it was just very experimental something you should
- 1:20 not be using at all. Uh I would say what I'm showcasing today it's up to you basically. Um we don't have security uh uh secure checking on it yet but it's using private temp
- 1:38 storage for all the calls. So to send them from the back end to the front end so I I don't think it's very unsecure but it's up to you to basically check it. You can check the code as well.
- 1:51 There is an alpha release you have to get that. So I'm just going to showcase here how it works. I have a a Drupal CMS up and running. Um, and I have then downloaded this. I'm just going to
- 2:04 install now AI module. I'm going to install AI Translate. It says deprecated because I haven't gotten the other AI Translate module. So, we're moving it out for 2.0. If you're actually setting
- 2:16 this up, use the AI Translate contract module, not the subm module. Uh, and the browser provider. And those three things uh will also make sure that you install
- 2:28 content translation and language. Installing this is going to take some time uh because of the language model module.
- 2:37 Uh so what this is installing now it's installing the core module of Drupal uh that basically takes care of uh you know having a abstraction layer how AI can talk. It installs the browser
- 2:53 provider. Uh, and I will start by showing the settings for that. So, there is a browser provider. It sets up the translation automatically. So, you see you have the chat prompt there as well,
- 3:03 but since that's experimental since you need a flag to install this. Uh, we have that disabled by default and you can choose to enable it. Um, there are some other settings there that you can read
- 3:16 about, but for translate you don't really have to change anything. What you need to do is go to uh default settings though and say that the browser client with Google Chrome is the default
- 3:28 translate text provider. Uh the next step we need to do is typical Drupal stuff. We need to add a language. So we only have English now.
- 3:38 So let's add uh German and Spanish. Uh and you're going to start seeing things here. uh that is connected to the browser provider then um so let's see here if it can
- 4:05 Spanish was what we wanted to add so this pops up here but I'm going to showcase where it will pop up for your editors as well so I'm not going to uh do anything here what we need to do as
- 4:17 well is go to content types. So, we're going to take the utility page that comes with Drupal CMS. You have to specify under language settings under edit that you enable translations
- 4:29 otherwise it's not translatable. And then we go to Drupal CMS uh under well we can just look at the privacy policy first. So, it's not much text you would have to add but you I'm
- 4:41 just going to showcase that this get translated. So, there's a drop-own translate. You can also click edit and click translate.
- 4:49 And now what it says then is translation language packs. And this is for my browser then of course. So if I download this and another person on their browser wants to do the same, they also need to
- 5:02 download this. So you just click on download and it's going to now download the English German pack. The opposite is going to be very fast. I think they're just inverting it. And then we're
- 5:13 downloading the English Spanish English. And then we can use it as we have used AI Translate with OpenAI or anything.
- 5:24 The only difference now when I click on this, it's going to basically ask my browser, can you translate this for me?
- 5:32 Save it into the back end and work as any other provider. Uh which means that it works like any other uh provider. You can see here German, but let's just do Spanish also. So I showcase this.
- 5:45 Um, and I would say that's quite powerful. It doesn't leave my computer now. In theory, I should be able to turn off my um computer uh sorry, turn off my internet and it should work. So you can
- 6:01 see here it's translated. You can see here it's translated. So very easy. uh very easy thing you can try out today but immensely powerful and it saves you a lot of money if you use
- 6:17 DeepL or OpenAI or something else for translation at the moment. Thank you for watching.

## The post in three sentences

The Browser Provider lets Drupal AI hand calls to AI that runs in the browser, here Chrome's built-in Translator API. Marcus installs AI, AI Translate and the Browser Provider on Drupal CMS, makes the browser the default translation provider and adds German and Spanish. Each editor downloads the language packs once, then translations run locally at no cost.
